Love and Sacrifice: VBS 2025

    We are the Hutcherson family. Ali has been connected to College Church since she was a child. I (Daniel) began attending College Church In 2013 along with my daughters, Colbie and Kenzie. Ali and I married 10 years ago, and we have added Michael and Jon to our family along the way.
     Over the past decade, some of our kids have regularly been involved in VBS. This year was special because for the first time all six of us participated together. Daniel helped with games, Ali assisted in a toddler class, Colbie and Kenzie worked in the nursery, and Michael and Jon experienced VBS with their peers.
     Daniel: I volunteered to help Will and Falan Francis, who do a great job each year being creative with games that get the children involved and active. Our great group of 7th and 8th grade boys helped get everything ready and helped with the games each night. We had pyramid relay races, pyramid dodge ball, and some fun water games and relays to end the week.
     Ali: I volunteered to help in the three-year-old class to encourage our own timid three-year-old to participate in VBS for the first time. I spent the evenings watching and listening to toddlers enjoy songs, hear stories and share snacks—the very same things I remember as a child in VBS at College Church. It was a blessing to be with fellow volunteers as toddlers expressed their unrestrained joy and simplified connection with the Bible.
     We have always been grateful for the time and energy invested by teachers, volunteers and organizers to make VBS a success. However, this year two other words came to mind: love and sacrifice. Each night we saw those words exemplified by
*tired parents bringing enthusiasm to games, singing and teaching after a full day at work;
*men giving up their evenings to provide a safe environment;
*teens stepping up to take on new responsibilities and roles;
*a host of volunteers cutting fruit into small pieces for our toddlers;
*parents toting their infants along so older siblings could be at VBS;
*grandparents sharing time with grandkids singing silly songs or volunteering in classrooms.

    Upon further reflection, this event succeeds every year because it is built on the love and sacrifice of Jesus that we want every child to experience at VBS.
