Dear Family and Friends,
We’ve been desperately wanting to get a mission update out to you for the past few weeks, but have not found the opportunity. There’s a lot to report, and there’s a lot to ask you to pray for, so I’m going to do the best I can. Please pardon me for dispensing with the more visually pleasant newsletter format this time, so that I can just focus more quickly on text. We hope you’ll find the chance to read through this and keep this work in your prayers.

MINISTRY!!! Just felt like I needed to do that :) I am constantly being
reminded that nothing stays the same! Just when you think things are
finding some kind of "Normality" something is triggered that makes you
sit up and scratch your head again. This past while we have been faced
with a surge in new children aged between 10 and 12 (P6/7's). This has
been pretty great and as a result both Monday nights and Wednesday
nights have grown big time as a result :) On Monday nights the growth is
manageable because of the class structure and the fact that it is all
Primary school kids who come and the bible time is geared to that age
group,. However, on Wednesday nights the structure is different and
presents us with some growing pains.

MADAGASCAR UPDATE The history of Madagascar is distinguished by the early isolation of the landmass from the ancient supercontinents containing Africa and India, and by the island’s late colonization by human settlers arriving in outrigger canoes from the Sunda islands between 200 BC and 500 AD. These two factors facilitated the evolution and survival of thousands of endemic plant and animal species, some of which have gone extinct or are currently threatened with extinction due to the pressures of a growing human population (20 million today). The country passed through several stages of colonization. After heavy British infl uence, it fi nally became a French colony in 1860. This lasted until independence in 1960.

Belvis Chikoma and his friend Misheck Chirwa were among the first local missionaries to go out from George Benson Christian College. I think they have served as teachers in Milenge district the past eight or ten years.

Christ... who strengthens!
After a youth weekend, climbing a mountain and making a trip down and
back to Edinburgh in the same day - I am aware that my brain may not be
at it's optimum for remembering all that God has done these past weeks.
However, what a few weeks they have been! A couple of weeks ago I was
studying for a lesson and came across an observation from a wise scholar
that said, "Too many people are so intoxicated by their busy lives that
they never stay sober long enough to ask the big questions in life." As
I observe and listen to our culture I totally agree with this. Yes, it
is important to be active in life, but at the core of our activity, may
it be God that we find there.

I think you’ll find a common theme throughout the articles of this newsletter—growth. God has blessed our ministry beyond what I could have hoped.

"Houston, we have a problem." Those famous words from the Apollo 13 commander always come to my mind when I think of the huge city where we came for Pam's surgery. And I guess you could say we came because of a problem, which has needed to be fixed for many years (How's that for a transition?). If you have been following our lives, you know that Pam had a total right knee replacement in 2004 in Colorado Springs. At that time, she needed both knees replaced, but because of a particularly bad experience with that right knee operation, she held off on the other one as long as she could. When she could stand it no longer, we decided against doing the left knee in Colorado Springs because of the altitude, The last time, she had already been in Colorado for several weeks before the surgery and so had had time to adjust to the altitude. But there wasn't enough time on this trip for that adjustment. So we came to Houston.

Welcome 2012! We hope your new year is off to a good start. With regard to the mission, ours certainly is, and we look forward to exciting things in 2012. Lately I’ve been assembling furniture in the process of making our new facility useable for worship and evangelism. With this facility, we will be able to do so many new things to share Christ with the city. In 2012 we look forward to putting the church on the map in České Budějovice.

Kirsty's Journey It is always a joy to begin a post with outstanding news! As you can see
from the pictures we have a new babe in Christ :) Kirsty is a lovely
girl and has made the choice to "Draw close to God." Two Friday
nights ago during our class, I was standing in line at the St Combs ice
cream van, when I got the message that Kirsty was waiting to talk to
me. As soon as I saw her face I knew the look of conviction in her eyes.
We talked for a while about what had caused her heart to be cut and for
her to make this cry for help. I say this every time, but when you get
to see first hand a soul finding their way back the their Father it is
humbling and beautiful! We arranged to meet the following Thursday to
study and to make sure Kirsty was totally convinced she was ready to
surrender her life to the King.

Growth...
 I
used an illustration recently about growth. It was centered on a
conversation between an apple grower and a friend. The friend asks,
"Show me a perfect apple." The farmer picks a small, green apple from
the tree and hands it to his friend. The friend is surprised and
expresses his confussion, "It is not red and I can't eat it yet!" The
farmer responds, "For it's age and stage it is perfect!" For the complete post please go to: http://bfstrachan.blogspot.com/2011/11/growth.html |
